Starting at an Aussie School

January 30 is a BIG day:
after 1 and a half months of summer vacation,
Justin and Audrey will finally be starting school in Sydney, Australia!
The day before school started,
we went to buy their full summer uniform, school bags,
Justin wears a green cap, green shirt, grey shorts, grey socks and black leather shoes,
while Audrey wears a green hat, green checked dress, white socks and black leather shoes~
Although it's a public school, the uniform requirements are still pretty rigorous!
This photo was taken outside the school~

As they were packing their stationery the afternoon before school started,
they got more and more excited until Justin was practically hopping around the house!
Daddy asked: "Can you calm down a bit?"
Justin exclaimed mournfully: "But I just really LOVE school!"
Justin even woke up in excitement some time around 2am,
and Daddy had to force him to go back to sleep.

Audrey didn't seem too concerned either,
even though it was her first day at primary school.
Having spent so many weeks at home with Mum and Dad,
with all their usual toys still in the furniture storage,
the two of them were bored to death!

As small schools sometimes have shortage of students for a certain grade,
sometimes they would have a cross-year composite class.
Justin has been put in a Years 3/4 composite class,
while Audrey will be in Year 1~~
I really like Audrey's new uniform, so pretty!

The school day is 9:30am to 3:30pm.
They finally felt more worried when they got to school,
and Justin in particular seemed more confused.
But the school expertly gathered up all the newbies,
had the existing students welcome them with applause at assembly in the morning,
then the deputy principal took them off on a tour of the school,
when Mummy and Daddy (and Benji) left.

Based on our observations,
there are 200+ students in this rural school,
and only 3 of them (including Justin and Audrey) are Asian!
In many Sydney areas the percentage of Asians has increased greatly,
and with so many Asian children in the same school,
many of them hardly ever need to speak English!

Since it was their first schooling experience in Australia,
Mummy and Dad were bound to be somewhat concerned,
especially since Audrey was going to primary school for the first time.
But both of them were very happy after school,
and were even more excited than they were this morning, if that was possible,
apparently having made many new friends.
Justin said: "I really, really, really, really, really, really, extremely love school!"

After school, Audrey showed us her spacious new classroom!

And Audrey's young, energetic new teacher!
Apparently Audrey has become very popular in class,
not at all shy, and not at all like someone coming to school for the first time.
A whole bunch of girls tried to hold her hands on the second day of school,
even fighting: "It's my turn to be her friend today!"
The young teacher was surprised:
"Wow, didn't know kids today are so proactive!
When we were little, we just waited by the wall and hoped someone would come and play with us!"

Apparently it's jfust a cycle of some writing, games, recess and eating, more writing, more games~
The school was built in 1888, so has quite some history,
and even back then every single classroom was equipped with an art room and little kitchen,
which is in fact quite a rarity amongst Sydney schools.
It has electronic whiteboards, computers, even an video conference classroom,
considered quite well equipped~

Audrey sat on a big black ant during lunchtime on Day 2,
and had to have an ice-pack put on her behind~

Aussie children usually take a half-hour break around 11am,
then one hour break for lunch around 1pm~
According to Justin: "Children here have to be very patient,
because the lesson times are really long,
and you never know when it'll be recess!
But that's all right, because the lessons are really fun too!
And you get to play for sooooo long at lunch!"

And this lovely lady is Justin's teacher for the 3/4 composite class~

Audrey's classroom is right next to a set of gym equipment (back of photo),
so the two of them go over to hang on the monkey bars every day.
Little Aussie girls' uniforms are generally dresses,
which is not exactly designed for climbing and hanging upside down on monkey bars,
so Mummy had to quickly purchase some sports knickers for Audrey.

After school, Justin, Audrey and Benji went to play in the school vegie garden,
where there are tomatoes free for the picking,
some chickens, and even a beehive!
Seeing them coming,
the supervising teacher of the garden asked them to help pick up the eggs,
then gave us 5 fresh organic eggs!

Although Mummy thought that Justin and Audrey's English were probably sufficient,
the school still applied for ESL hours for them.
The principal said: "Since they qualify, we might just as well apply!
If it turns out they don't need it,
the ESL teachers can still extend them!"

After testing, it turned out that not only were Justin and Audrey's English literacy sufficient,
they were in fact ahead of their chronological peers by about 2.5 years!
According to Audrey's teacher, the ESL teacher tested her reading level to be Level 25.
Mummy asked: So what's the usual level for first graders?
She replied: Oh, usually Level 7 or 8!
(Geeze... Audrey is already considered not much of a reader in our family!)

Justin is really very peculiar....
his Maths skills are not particularly strong,
but he reads at about Grade 6 level~~
Is he really Taiwanese at all????

Actually Aussie kids usually don't start learning phonics until they begin kindie at the age of 5,
and they start with readers of only a few words each page.
Teachers usually take the "slow but steady" attitude,
so the progress for the first few years is not that fast.
Most Aussie parents believe that the primary school stage is the time for learning people skills and working skills;
so long as the children's literacy and numeracy meet national standards by Year 6,
they are happy.

Powerpoint,

So now the school confirms that Justin and Audrey don't need ESL,
but instead will convert the hours to extension classes.
To avoid their feeling strange about being pulled out of class on their own,
the teachers even chose another kid similar to their levels to take the extension classes with them.
The teachers are also helping them to design a Powerpoint,
so that Justin and Audrey can talk about Taiwan.

After school I asked them: if you rank your day from 0 to 100,
how satisfied are they with the school?
Audrey immediately said: 100!
Justin said: 95..... because how come Audrey gets "show and tell" and we don't????
After dinner Justin re-adjusted his score up to 99,
so it seems they are indeed very happy!!
